Window Cleaning History

Remembering Window Cleaning History

As long as there have been glass and windows, there has been a need for window cleaning. Despite the lost knowledge of the origins of glass, it likely dates back as far as 2000 B.C. but was not mass-produced until the 19th century.

These first windows were cleaned by housewives or servants, with a simple solution, a bucket of water, and a cloth. It wasn’t until the construction boom of the 1860’s that a demand for window cleaners came about. Squeegees were originally developed by an Italian immigrant in 1936 from fisherman’s tools and are now synonymous with window cleaning until the development of the water fed pole system developed in the 1990s.
